Partial Stack of 4/4 Red Oak (I had more than this but I already started cutting when I decided to start takeing pictures) I started by rough cutting out my pieces into 4 groups.. Group A the boards that I was going to use for the Face frame. Group B the boards that were going to be glued up as the side pannels.  Group C the boards to be used in the shelf panels. And finnaly, Group D the boards to be used for the doors.  I did this for planning so each of the groups would be planned to the same thickness, but they didn't necessarily need to be the same as the other groups. Breaking down more boards on the Sliding Compound Miter Saw
Pile of the boards in the 4 groups Final pile of all the different boards ( minus a few I'll explain later) Getting my Ridgid Planner ready for planning all the boards
Planning the boards, First skimming lightly to true up the face and then taking group A down to 3/4", Group B, C, D down to maximum thickness for each group after being trued up an defects taken out. Boards after planing. (notice the labling on the ends so they didn't get planned off. Thank my wife for that tip, I would have just planned off my markings from the face and hoped I could remember what they all were)  Now looking at my pile of wood and my sketches, I realised I forgot the 5 loose shelves.  So I had to make a nother trip to the hardwood store to pick up 3 more 12 footers. The Foreman keeping and eye out to make sure everything is done right.
First I took the 6 boards for the sides and decided which set of 3 looked the best together and lined up the grains.  I marked the Triangles across the boards so I could easily line them up when I glue.
Then I did a test clamp of the three boards to glue up a side panel to see how long it would take and where I would need all the clamps. (my first panel gule up).   This is the glue up of the first side, I had a helper help apply the glue and put on the clamps.
This seccod side I went and got a bottle of extended open time Titebond glue and had to do this glue up by myself.  The extended open time glue gave me enough time to spread the glue and apply the clamps. After the glue dried for about 30 min, I took my chisel and scraped off all the excess squeeze out.
This is the back side with the glue squeeze out I did this same process with the Top, Middle and Bottom Shelfs After drying for 24 hrs each, I got my hand plane out and flattened one side of it where the boards didn't stay completly flush.

07/14/2007DavidWhat I ended up using was a couple rollerblade bearings, steel rod and some rare earth magnets. In the Cradle side I drilled a hole with a forsner bit the right size for the outer diameter of the bearing. then without moving anything I changed the bit to the size of the rare earth magnet (3/8 or 1/2 i forget which) I then glued the magnet into the hole. On the mating tower I drilled a hole to fit the steel rod (3/8” I think). I did some testing to make sure the rods were long enough so that when assembled you couldn’t pull out the rods without unbolting to towers from the bottom streatcher. I glued the rods in the tower side and the magnet would pull it though the bearing and hold it tight. I also put 2 nylon washers in between to prevent the towers from rubbing on the sides of the cradle.
07/14/2007RonI'm going to attempt a similar cradle for my sister, how do you join the cradle to the base for the pivots?
