Hand Planing the three shelfs I glued up.  After finishing the hand planing, I put it through the thickness planer to clean up both sides.  I brought the sides and the shelfs to 3/4" thickness.  This is why I left them as thick as possible in the first planing. Trimming up the top to final width. Cleaning up each side.
I took the top to the router table to route 3/8"x3/8" rabit on each of the ends. Rabit on each side. Matching Rabit on the top of the side boards.
Next was routing the dado's and rabits in the side pieces. Rabit on the bottom, back for the rear kick plate.
and a Dodo 3/4x3/8 near the bottom and middle for the fixed shelves.

Next was to set up the the edge guild and route a 5/8x 1/4 dado for the shelf rails. The dado on the front side was 1" from the edge. Cutting the dato on the back side at 1 1/4" from the back edge.
Next I used a 1/8" spiral down cut straight bit to cut a dado 1/8" from the back edge for the 1/8" oak ply back to sit in. Another view of the dado. Now I sanded the sides with 120 and 220 to remove any machining marks and get an even smoothness.

07/14/2007DavidWhat I ended up using was a couple rollerblade bearings, steel rod and some rare earth magnets. In the Cradle side I drilled a hole with a forsner bit the right size for the outer diameter of the bearing. then without moving anything I changed the bit to the size of the rare earth magnet (3/8 or 1/2 i forget which) I then glued the magnet into the hole. On the mating tower I drilled a hole to fit the steel rod (3/8” I think). I did some testing to make sure the rods were long enough so that when assembled you couldn’t pull out the rods without unbolting to towers from the bottom streatcher. I glued the rods in the tower side and the magnet would pull it though the bearing and hold it tight. I also put 2 nylon washers in between to prevent the towers from rubbing on the sides of the cradle.
07/14/2007RonI'm going to attempt a similar cradle for my sister, how do you join the cradle to the base for the pivots?
