Another view of the glue up. This is a view of the test fit of the Top.  I had originally designed the back to just rest flush on the back of the top board. I descided I just didn't like it and wanted to do the same to the top as the bottom and have a 1/8" grove for the backer to set in. Well this wasn't going to work with the current top so I was going to have to make a new one.  Not a problem because this one trimming off the rabits will work for a loose shelf.
Since I needed to make another top I figured I would make all the other loose shelves too. So I rough cross cut all the shelf boards.  They have already been planed and ripped to width. Action Shot of the cross cut.
And another action shot, Sliding compound miter saw at work. Breaking down more boards Now i needed to match up the boards into pairs.
Matching the grain and marking them 5 sets total Thats a killer cut!  No I didn't really do that. I just marked all the inner sides so I could make a clean glueline rip.
Ripped off about 1/16" the joining sides using a Freud Glue line Rip blade. This is my jointer. Set up the clamps for the glue up. Glue the new top together.

07/14/2007DavidWhat I ended up using was a couple rollerblade bearings, steel rod and some rare earth magnets. In the Cradle side I drilled a hole with a forsner bit the right size for the outer diameter of the bearing. then without moving anything I changed the bit to the size of the rare earth magnet (3/8 or 1/2 i forget which) I then glued the magnet into the hole. On the mating tower I drilled a hole to fit the steel rod (3/8” I think). I did some testing to make sure the rods were long enough so that when assembled you couldn’t pull out the rods without unbolting to towers from the bottom streatcher. I glued the rods in the tower side and the magnet would pull it though the bearing and hold it tight. I also put 2 nylon washers in between to prevent the towers from rubbing on the sides of the cradle.
07/14/2007RonI'm going to attempt a similar cradle for my sister, how do you join the cradle to the base for the pivots?
