Cross cut the Top to the right length. This is where the beauty of the SCMS shines. Able to cross cut 12" and its so much easier than doing it on the table saw, I can leave that setup dedicated for rips.  After the cross cuts I ripped to the exact width I needed, the exact width of the sides. Now I started by dadoing the 1/8" slot an 1/8" in from the back edge. The resulting dado.
Close up. Now I use my 5/8" stright bit to route the 3/8" rabits (I took exact measurments form the rabits in the side boards) Here is the test fit.  It looks so much cleaner withe the backer inset into the top.  I am glad I made that change.
Glue up of the top. Top view Side view, I got one monster pipe clamp in there to help.
Here are the boards for the Face frame Ripped 1-1/2" wide short pieces Ripped 1-1/2" wide long pieces.
Cross cut the long sides exactly the same. I clamped the side board on. Then marked 4 lines evenly space along the length for the location of my dowels.

07/14/2007DavidWhat I ended up using was a couple rollerblade bearings, steel rod and some rare earth magnets. In the Cradle side I drilled a hole with a forsner bit the right size for the outer diameter of the bearing. then without moving anything I changed the bit to the size of the rare earth magnet (3/8 or 1/2 i forget which) I then glued the magnet into the hole. On the mating tower I drilled a hole to fit the steel rod (3/8” I think). I did some testing to make sure the rods were long enough so that when assembled you couldn’t pull out the rods without unbolting to towers from the bottom streatcher. I glued the rods in the tower side and the magnet would pull it though the bearing and hold it tight. I also put 2 nylon washers in between to prevent the towers from rubbing on the sides of the cradle.
07/14/2007RonI'm going to attempt a similar cradle for my sister, how do you join the cradle to the base for the pivots?
