It just so happens I just got my new Steel City 17" drill press and it's mortise attachment, ( can see the assembly here) So it would be a great time to try it out.  I have never made a mortise and tenon joint before or used a mortiser.  The only think i don't like about this process was the difficult lineing up the edge of the mortice and centering it in the board.  I guess this will take some time and technique.  Here I am plungin in for the first cut. The final mortice.  The included chisels and bits work quite well and sliced right through the wood.
You can see here it left a little rough of an edge, and bottom but that was easily and quickly cleaned out with a chisel.  Now to make the mortise in the kick plate.  This was a bit more difficult since it was taller than the hold down and guides could support.  So I riged up another fence and sandwiched it in. I still had to hold it steady with 1 hand and it wanted to lift, but the cuts turned out well.
Now to make the tenons.  Luckly (I checked before making the mortises) I left this member more than long enough for the 3/8" tenons. I marked the depth of the top one, then marked the top of the cheek of the bottom one, and finally the final length of the bottom tenon. I used the table saw and snuck up to the correct width. Making a pass on each side and checking the mortise. Not wanting to change the table saw blade heighth so I could go back to it later, I used 3 layers of tape on each side and I snuck up the the width of the tennons. I did this separatly on each side because the widths of the mortices could be different since I didn't use any stop blocks or markings when making hte mortices.  After geting the right width, I made a few final passes all around to make a clean shoulder.
I test fitted, and then glue and clamped the three peices together. Now it was time to glue the assembly to the case.  I used 2 cals to proved the necessary pressure to the middle of the case.  Right angle guides to get the bottom flush and clamps to pull everything together. I forgot my camera during this part of shop time, but I broke down the large boards into rough size pieces for the doors.  Then cut them to final size.  they are ready for the glue up.
My layout of all the pieces. The door will be using a bread board type layout. Ready for glue. Camp up of the door's center pieces.

07/14/2007DavidWhat I ended up using was a couple rollerblade bearings, steel rod and some rare earth magnets. In the Cradle side I drilled a hole with a forsner bit the right size for the outer diameter of the bearing. then without moving anything I changed the bit to the size of the rare earth magnet (3/8 or 1/2 i forget which) I then glued the magnet into the hole. On the mating tower I drilled a hole to fit the steel rod (3/8” I think). I did some testing to make sure the rods were long enough so that when assembled you couldn’t pull out the rods without unbolting to towers from the bottom streatcher. I glued the rods in the tower side and the magnet would pull it though the bearing and hold it tight. I also put 2 nylon washers in between to prevent the towers from rubbing on the sides of the cradle.
07/14/2007RonI'm going to attempt a similar cradle for my sister, how do you join the cradle to the base for the pivots?
