After the glue set for a day it was now time to flatten it all out. I couldn't fit this through the thickness planer so I had to do it by had.  I had my #5 Jack plane.  I took the bordes down so they were all the same thickness and there were no more ridges between the boards. I also used my Mills Falls Low Angle Block plane that I just finished cleaning up here. (my only 2 planes right now)  The resulting shavings from the two doors.
I then took my sander to take out any planing marks. Now I took the end boards ad used the router and 1/4" bit to rout the long grove for the tongue and grove. Resulting groves.
Now cut the tongues.  Due to an over site on my part (I put the length of the board minus the tongues into my cutlist instead of full length with the tongues).  I had an extra 1/4" of length on the rough size so I made the tongues 1/4" long which shortened the inner door parts 1/4".  I made this up by keeping the top and bottom a little wider (since I always cut them bigger in rough form). Tongues cut. The joint is going to be like a blind tongue and grove or Mortise and Tennon joint. So i cut the ends off the tongue with the router (just raising it up and keeping the same fence setting).
Used my chisels to square up the tennon. Next I took the top and bottom boards to my drill press with it's mortising attachment to square up the ends of the hole and lengthening them to the desidered legnth.  I made the groves longer than the tongues to allow for expansion.
Used the block plane to chamfer the edge to make it easer to assemble. Test fit. And glue up. I just glued the center 1-2" of the center panel to the outsides.  This will allow the center panel to expand and not break the top and bottom boards.  I think i may add a few brads at the outsides throught he tongues to help hold it together but allow them to flex a little.

07/14/2007DavidWhat I ended up using was a couple rollerblade bearings, steel rod and some rare earth magnets. In the Cradle side I drilled a hole with a forsner bit the right size for the outer diameter of the bearing. then without moving anything I changed the bit to the size of the rare earth magnet (3/8 or 1/2 i forget which) I then glued the magnet into the hole. On the mating tower I drilled a hole to fit the steel rod (3/8” I think). I did some testing to make sure the rods were long enough so that when assembled you couldn’t pull out the rods without unbolting to towers from the bottom streatcher. I glued the rods in the tower side and the magnet would pull it though the bearing and hold it tight. I also put 2 nylon washers in between to prevent the towers from rubbing on the sides of the cradle.
07/14/2007RonI'm going to attempt a similar cradle for my sister, how do you join the cradle to the base for the pivots?
