After feeling the weight of this thing I thought I better build the moble base I
had and assemble the Drill press on the unit instead of trying to lift the fully
assembled drill press onto the base. |
This probably took me more time to build than assembling the drill press.
I had to glue up some oak scraps to make the 1-1/2" square rails. Then after partial
assembly i realized the width I wanted didn't allow any room for the pivot wheel,
so I had to widen it just enough to fit the bracket in the middle on the front.
|
I put the base in the unit and then bolted the column to to the base. |
 |
 |
 |
|
The fit was looser than I wanted so I made some Oak shims front and rear in the
moble base to make a nice tight fit that wouldn't move. |
The table brace was already installed on the column, I just had to install the crank.
I took the plastic off, cleaned the rust inhibitor off and waxed the column. |
Now the monster! The instructions say it takes 2 people to put the head on the column.
I would trust them, but unfortunatly it was after 10:00pm, wife in bed and I had
to get it on there to clear enough room to get my car in the garage. So I heaved
the 100+lb head on to the table. Used the crank to lift it up as high as I could.
Then with everything I had, lifted and set it onto the column. |

and Light. |
Checking in the pully box, I notice a little bit of damage. The Center pully had
come out of its hole and scraped up the drill press speed chart. |
And the tell tale scratches on the pully. One thing I am not sure on is this
clip doesn't connect to anything. |
 |
 |
 |
Here is where it looks like it should connect to something, but when closing the
cover there is nothing holding it closed except its weight. I'll have to contact
Steel City and see if that is the way it is supposed to be.
UPDATE: After talking with Steel City the clip
shown in the previous picture is supposed to contact the screw shown in this picture
to hold the lid closed. It was possible in the shipping that the clip was
bent and all that was needed was to move it back into the correct position.
They also fedexed a new speed chart for me to replace the damaged one. They
were quite a pleasure to work with. |
